cinch Premiership

cinch Premiership Team of the Season 22/23

Selecting an XI of the best top flight performers this term

GK – Kelle Roos (Aberdeen)

The Dutchman enjoyed an impressive debut season at Pittodrie as the Dons ended the season in third place in the cinch Premiership.

Roos kept 13 clean sheets in 31 league matches, which played a key role as Barry Robson’s Reds found form at the perfect time.

Aberdeen’s mid-season wobble coincided with Roos’ absence through a hamstring injury, causing him to miss defeats to Heart of Midlothian, Hibernian, St. Mirren and Darvel.

The 31-year-old made 105 saves in the league – only Ross County’s Ross Laidlaw made more with the Staggies’ shot stopper playing seven more Premiership matches than Roos.

DEF – Greg Taylor (Celtic)

Season 2022/23 was another year of progression for the Scotland international under Ange Postecoglou.

Taylor’s importance to Celtic’s style was highlighted during his brief absence through injury as he came to the fore as Celtic clinched the domestic treble.

Taylor’s partnership with Jota on the left flank was one of the champions’ most potent weapons throughout the year.

The 25-year-old provided five assists in the cinch Premiership and enjoyed a career high three goals, including a memorable winner in a seven-goal thriller at Tynecastle back in October.

DEF – Cameron Carter-Vickers (Celtic)

A rock at the back for the cinch Premiership champions.

The American centre back led by example for Celtic until a knee injury curtailed his season at the end of April.

Strong in the air, powerful across the ground along with clever positional sense, Carter-Vickers has earned admiration from supporters, fellow players and pundits alike.

Celtic fans will be hoping that their number 20 is back in time for the new campaign as the Hoops look to repeat their domestic dominance and make inroads in Europe.

DEF – James Tavernier (Rangers)

It’s been another landmark campaign for the Rangers captain.

Tavernier achieved two key moments in 2022/23 – playing over 400 games for the Ibrox side and reaching 101 goals in a Rangers shirt.

Despite playing right back, the ‘Gers skipper scored 16 times in the cinch Premiership to finish as the club’s top scorer.

He also provided nine assists and remains one of the league’s set-play specialists with strikes against Celtic and Hibernian in the post-split matchups.

MID – Callum McGregor (Celtic)

The symbol of this Celtic side and their ‘we never stop’ mantra under Postecoglou’s leadership.

After playing 59 times in 2021/22, McGregor has made 51 appearances in all competitions this term with his two Scotland matches remaining before he enjoys a well-earned rest.

McGregor’s ability to dictate the tempo of matches or turn them in Celtic’s favour proved pivotal in their hunt for three trophies this year.

His winning goal against Aberdeen at Pittodrie was one of several big moments in another hugely impressive season.

MID – Reo Hatate (Celtic)

Having arrived in Glasgow in January 2022, much was expected of the Japanese midfielder in his first full season in the SPFL.

Hatate delivered with consistently high performances throughout 2022/23, including a Man of the Match display in the Viaplay Cup final.

A robust, dynamic midfield player, the 25-year-old scored nine goals and produced eight assists across the campaign.

He was rewarded with the cinch Premiership Player of the Month award in February and his form earned him a spot in the most recent Japan squad for matches against El Salvador and Peru.

MID – Malik Tillman (Rangers)

Fans are always warned about falling in love with a loan player but Malik Tillman’s displays for Rangers made it hard for their supporters to resist his charms.

Arriving for the season from Bayern Munich, the American brought something different to the ‘Gers midfield – capable of gliding past players with the ball as well as providing the finishing touch to moves.

Tillman contributed with 12 goals in 46 appearances before returning to his parent club when injury cut his season short in the final few weeks.

His fellow professionals recognised the 21-year-old’s talent as he was named Young Player of the Year.

FWD – Lawrence Shankland (Heart of Midlothian)

The first Hearts player to hit 20 goals in a season since John Robertson in 1991/92 – the Scotland striker was in incredible form for the Jam Tarts.

Hearts’ number nine scored 24 goals in 37 cinch Premiership appearances including a memorable hat-trick against Ross County in GW33.

Shankland wore the captain’s armband for part of the season following Craig Gordon’s injury and he led by example as he helped the capital club qualify for the UEFA Conference League.

A prolific penalty box forward, Shankland will be hoping to build on a remarkable debut season in Gorgie with more goals in 2023/24.

FWD - Duk (Aberdeen)

One of the league’s most entertaining new arrivals, Luis ‘Duk’ Lopes was a joy to watch in this year’s cinch Premiership.

Aberdeen’s number 11 was a goal scorer, dribbler and entertainer all in one and the Dons fans took the attacker to their hearts.

Spectacular efforts against Ross County and Dundee United will live long in the memory with the 23-year-old capable of producing moments of great skill.

Duk scored 16 goals in 37 Premiership appearances with his displays earning him the Player of the Month award for March.

FWD – Kyogo Furuhashi (Celtic)

The cinch Premiership leading marksman and the top scorer across all cinch SPFL divisions, Kyogo Furuhashi had a season to remember.

Kyogo found the net 27 times in 36 league games while his total of 34 goals in all competitions included a brace in the Viaplay Cup final as well as a Scottish Cup final strike.

Blessed with brilliant movement around the penalty box and possessing a ruthless finishing touch, Celtic’s forward was the main man in their pursuit of the treble.

Adored by fans and team-mates alike, Kyogo swept up a collection of individual awards at the conclusion of a fantastic season.

FWD – Kevin van Veen (Motherwell)

Crowned King of Fir Park by Motherwell supporters, Kevin van Veen set a new club record by scoring in 11 consecutive cinch Premiership matches.

The Dutchman couldn’t stop scoring as the Steelmen found a new lease of life under the management of Stuart Kettlewell, finishing 2022/23 with 30 points from 14 matches under their new boss.

Only Kyogo could better van Veen’s 25 cinch Premiership goals with the forward finding the net from all sorts of angles.

From a powerful individual turn and run at Celtic Park to his exquisite touch and finish against Kilmarnock at home – van Veen lit up the league with his displays.
