cinch SPFL Preview - 1 Day to Go

Resident statto @splstats brings us the numbers as we count down towards the start of the 23/24 season

  • The 2022/23 season saw record attendances for SPFL competitions, with 5,087,400 supporters in total turning out for matches across the four cinch SPFL divisions, end of season play-offs, the Viaplay Cup and the SPFL Trust trophy. This as the 1st time in the history of the SPFL that attendances exceeded 5 million. Thank you to every single one of you for being record breakers.

  • Hamilton Academical's Ryan One was the youngest player to appear in last season's SPFL - the Accies forward was just 16 years and 35 days old when he came off the bench on the opening day of last season. One was one of several 16 year-olds to appear in last season's SPFL - 12 in total, including at least one in each division. Dylan Smith of Ross County was the youngest cinch Premiership player, making his debut aged 16 years and 67 days before going on to play 13 times, including five starts. Elgin City's Stevie Dunn was the oldest player to appear in last season's SPFL - the 52 year-old goalkeeper came on as a late substitute on the final day of the season.

  • Dunfermline Athletic will return to the cinch Championship after winning last season's cinch League 1 title by a comfortable 14 point margin. The Pars lost just 1 league match last season, fewer than any other side in the SPFL - they were unbeaten in their final 24 league matches after losing to Montrose in October. The Pars also conceded the fewest goals in the SPFL last season - they let in just 21 goals, with the next lowest tally being Celtic with 34.

  • Livingston's Joel Nouble scored the 1st goal of last season's SPFL season, finding the net within the first 5 minutes of his side's opener against Rangers. It seems likely that this season's opener will be scored by either an Arbroath or Dundee United player in tomorrow night's cinch Championship fixture. In 10 years of the SPFL, there have only been 13 opening day goalless draws across 210 matches - though Arbroath did draw 0-0 with Ayr United on the first day of last season.

  • Matt O'Riley was number 1 in terms of assists in the 2023/24 cinch Premiership, setting up 12 goals in total. The only other players to reach double figures were his now departed team-mates Jota (11) and Aaron Mooy (10). Rangers duo Borna Barisic and James Tavernier were next up with 9 assists apiece. Aberdeen, Hibernian, Kilmarnock and Motherwell were also represented in the top 10 by Leighton Clarkson (8), Elie Youan (7), Daniel Armstrong (7) and Blair Spittal (7) respectively.
