cinch SPFL Season Preview - 7 days to go...

Resident Statto @SPLStats brings us the numbers as we count down towards the start of the 23/24 season

  • The SPFL celebrated its 10th birthday this summer, having been formed by the merger of the Scottish Premier League and Scottish Football League in 2013. There have been over 7,000 matches played in the SPFL - 7,319 to be precise - with 20,330 goals scored. This works out at an average of 2.78 goals per game.
  • Celtic are the defending cinch Premiership champions - they finished 7 points clear of Rangers last season to win their 11th league title in 12 years. The Hoops racked up 114 goals across the season - an average of exactly 3 per match, which is over 20 more than any other SPFL club managed. They are unbeaten in their last 44 home league matches, with their last loss coming against St Mirren in January 2021.
  • Dundee will return to the cinch Premiership after sealing last season's cinch Championship title with a dramatic final day win over Queen's Park at Ochilview. This will be the 7th season out of the last 10 that the Dees have played in the top flight - their highest finish in that period was 6th place in 2014/15.
  • Celtic's Japanese forward Kyogo Furuhashi was the top goalscorer in last season's SPFL, scoring 27 times to help his side to the cinch Premiership title. Another 7 SPFL players also scored 20 or more league goals last season - Kevin van Veen (25), Lawrence Shankland (24), Tommy Goss (23), Calum Gallagher (22), Ruari Paton (22), Charlie Reilly (22) Dipo Akinyemi (20).
  • Hibernian have won each of their last 7 opening-day league fixtures, which is the longest ongoing run of any club in the SPFL. The Hibees beat St Johnstone 1-0 in Perth on the opening weekend of last season's cinch Premiership, and will host St Mirren in the first game of this season.
