Coughlin leaves with mixed feelings

East Stirlingshire head coach John Coughlin will bring the curtain down on his three-year spell in charge against Montrose tomorrow with mixed feelings.

East Stirlingshire head coach John Coughlin will bring the curtain down on his three-year spell in charge against Montrose tomorrow with mixed feelings.

The former St Mirren, Berwick Rangers and Stenhousemuir manager turned down the opportunity to extend his stay and will be replaced by Peterhead coach Craig Tully.

Coughlin said: “I am leaving with both a sense of satisfaction and a sense of disappointment. We have progressed every year as a club on and off the park, which is great due to the limited resources that we have, but I am disappointed not to lead the Shire to promotion.

“I took Berwick and Stenhousemuir out of this division and I reckon Shire could have done that this year if we had found a regular goalscorer. It could also be on next season if someone steps forward to score goals but it will have to happen without me.”

Coughlin added: “I read when Gardner Speirs left Queen’s Park that things had run their course and I know exactly how he feels. I have done three years and it is time to move on.

“Hopefully we can end our time with a win. I will then take a couple of weeks off and see what happens after that. I would like to get back into football but, of course, I will need to wait and see what comes up now.

“I was out of the game for 18 months after St Mirren and then the Berwick job came out of the blue. Hopefully, something similar will come up again.”
