Derek Holmes in action for Airdrie UnitedArbroath boss Paul Sheerin has secured the services of his one-time St. Johnstone team-mate Derek Holmes with the big striker agreeing to join the Gayfield men despite interest from his present club Airdrie and previous employers Queen of the South.

The 33-year-old hit-man began his career at Hearts and scored once for the Tynecastle men before grabbing goals for Cowdenbeath, Raith Rovers, Ross County, Bournemouth, Carlisle United and Rotherham before teaming up with Sheerin as St Johnstone won the First Division in 2009.

Holmes then moved to Palmerston before spending last season with the Diamonds with Sheerin saying, “Derek is a player I know well and he creates a lot of goals for his team-mates as well as having a strong physical presence which is something we have not had too much of.”
