Dundee are in ninth place and are seeking their first league win of 2021/22 after three draws and two defeats so far.
The most recent Dundee derby was in the Championship on December 27, 2019 and ended in a 1-1 draw at Tannadice. Nicky Clark opened the scoring early on but Graham Dorrans equalised for the Dark Blues shortly after the interval.
Dundee's last win against their city rivals was 2-1 in a League Cup second-round tie at Dens Park in August 2017 when Paul McGowan scored the winner.
Sunday will be the first top-flight Dundee derby since May 2016 when Craig Wighton's late goal earned the Dee a 2-1 home win and confirmed United's relegation.
Dundee United haven't lost a derby at Tannadice since August 2004 when Dundee won 2-1 with goals from Steve Lovell (penalty) and John Sutton.
