Ross Graham scored the only goal of the contest, heading home after 74 minutes to keep the pressure on Hibernian and Aberdeen in the race for third spot.
United sit six points ahead of seventh-place St. Mirren with just two matches remaining until the league splits into two groups of six.
Jim Goodwin's men face Heart of Midlothian next while Ross County host Aberdeen.
