Eight days to go

Resident statto @splstats continues his countdown to the 2022/23 league season...

•    Kilmarnock are back in the cinch Premiership after securing the cinch Championship title last season. Killie No 8 Blair Alston scored the crucial title-winning goal at Rugby Park in the final minute of their match against Arbroath.

•    Arbroath No 8 Michael McKenna finished as top scorer in the 2021/22 cinch Championship, and also won the PFA Player of the Year for the division. McKenna netted 15 goals in 34 games as the Red Lichties finished second in the table. The 31-year-old had never previously hit double figures in a league season.

•    St Johnstone retained their place in the cinch Premiership thanks to a 6-2 aggregate victory over Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the play-off final. Saints had previously been Premiership top-six perennials – prior to last year they had finished in the top half of the division in eight of the previous 10 seasons, and had not finished below eighth in the table since they were promoted in 2009.

•    Stirling Albion will participate in cinch League 2 for the eighth consecutive season, having been relegated into the league back in 2015. Darren Young will have his first full season in charge, having taken over in December to guide them to a seventh- place finish last year. Young has won this division on two previous occasions – as a player with Alloa Athletic in 2011/12 and as a manager with Albion Rovers in 2014/15.

•    Clyde will be looking to improve on back-to-back eighth place finishes in cinch League 1 as they begin the post-Broadwood era. Danny Lennon’s side will be playing their matches at New Douglas Park in Hamilton this season – their first home league fixture at the ground will be against Peterhead on August 6. The Bully Wee are now in their fourth consecutive season in the third tier, after spending nearly a decade in cinch League 2.
