The Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) has hailed supporters after setting a new SPFL top flight attendance record

The Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) has hailed supporters after setting a new SPFL top flight attendance record.

A total of 3,729,865 fans have now attended cinch Premiership games this season – the highest for the league in the SPFL’s near 10-year history.

The previous end of season high of 3,639,331 from season 2018/19 was surpassed after 99,991 fans attended games across the top flight on Wednesday night.

The final total will rise even further at the weekend, with big games in both the top six and bottom six.

Neil Doncaster, SPFL chief executive, said: “Supporters deserve massive credit after setting this new top flight attendance record.

“It was a night of great drama across the cinch Premiership, and it was really encouraging to see such big crowds across the division.

“It’s been an excellent year for attendances in our game more generally, after it was revealed earlier this year that Scotland again has the highest attendance per capita in Europe.

“We now turn our attention to the final weekend of fixtures, which promises to be a compelling set of matches.”

The biggest attendance of the night was at Ibrox as 48,428 watched Rangers draw 2-2 with Heart of Midlothian, which was shown live on Sky Sports.

At Pittodrie 16,303 attended to see Aberdeen clinch third spot with a 3-0 win over St Mirren, whilst 18,171 watched Hibernian defeat Celtic 4-2 at Easter Road.

In the bottom six, 10,406 turned out to watch Kilmarnock win 3-0 at 12th placed Dundee United and 4,700 supporters attended Ross County’s thrilling 3-3 draw with St Johnstone. Livingston’s 1-1 draw with Motherwell, which saw Kevin Van Veen score a tenth consecutive league goal, was watched by 1,983 supporters.
