This was the first meeting of the teams in a competitive game since season 2004/05 and was a memorable day for the Dundee United fans at Tannadice.
All the goals came in the first half - Gavin Gunning opened the scoring for Peter Houston's men then Johnny Russell grabbed a double, his second a stunning strike from distance.
Russell and Dundee's Stephen O'Donnell were sent off after 72 minutes. The attendance was 13,538. United also won 3-0 in the second derby that season at Dens Park in December.
