Brief Round Up Of Yesterday's Action

IRN-BRU leagues - a quick summary

IRN-BRU SFL First Division

League leading Queen of the South travelled to Somerset Park and came back with a 1-0 win courtesy of Derek Holmes’ header in 20 minutes and it was the first time in three attempts that Gordon Chisholm’s men have held on to top spot this season.

Joint on points but behind on goals, Dundee, are lucky to have a striker other than Leigh Griffiths in goalscoring form with Sean Higgins knocking in both goals as Airdrie United were defeated 2-1 at Dens Park. Kenny Black’s visitors stunned Dens Park when John Baird shot home to put them ahead with Higgins levelling with a header shortly afterwards. The winner came when the striker fired home from the edge of the box.

Third placed Partick Thistle won 2-0 at Morton thanks to second half goals from Liam Buchanan and Simon Donnelly.

Ross County defeated Inverness 2-1 win at Victoria Park with defender Scott Boyd nodding the ball in to make sure a goal was awarded after a Scott Morrison free-kick had struck the underside of the bar and bounced downwards. Michael Gardyne bulleted home a header to put Derek Adams’ side two ahead before Inverness came roaring back into things in the second half and after a couple of close shaves Adam Rooney pulled a goal back.

Dunfermline won 2-1 in front of over 6,000 fans at Stark’s Park despite Raith leading at half time through Mark Campbell’s looping header. Graeme Bayne headed a leveller 10 minutes into the second period with David Graham forcing the ball over the line from a Willie Gibson cross for a last gasp winner.

IRN-BRU SFL Second Division

Danny Lennon’s Cowdenbeath have now risen to the top of the Second Division, although they left it late to see off bottom side Clyde 1-0. Blue Brazil substitute Scott McBride fired home a last gasp penalty to win the match for at Broadwood after Alan Lithgow was penalised for hand ball.

Stirling lost for a second week running to allow the Central Park side to overtake them, with Albion’s unbeaten home record also going as neighbours Alloa won 1-0 at Forthbank. Andy Scott netted a penalty midway through the first half, after Stuart Noble had been fouled, to take the points back to Recreation Park.

Peterhead hit East Fife with two late goals to win 2-1 at New Bayview with Bobby Mann and John Stewart, also from the spot, winning the game in the last 10 minutes after Paul McManus had given their hosts an early lead.

Dumbarton struck three times in the second half to see off Stenhousemuir at Ochilview with Roddy Hunter, Scott Chaplain and Ross O’Donoghue all netting.

Jim Weir’s return to management saw his Arbroath side earn a goalless draw at Brechin to move above Clyde in the table.

IRN-BRU SFL Third Division

Livingston emphatically held on the lead at the top of the Third Division with Gary Bollan’s men winning 6-1 at Elgin City. Keaghan Jacobs struck twice with David Winters also netting to put the Almondvale men three up before a Mark Nicholson own goal and goals from Andrew Halliday and Jason Talbot had them six ahead. Craig Gunn fired a late consolation for Elgin.

Berwick lost a two goal lead at Stranraer before hitting back to win 4-2 where a David Mitchell own goal and a Damon Gray strike had the Borderers ahead at half time only for Darren McGeough and Stuart McColm to level. Jamie Ewart and Gray won the game a second time for Berwick.

Albion Rovers were held 0-0 at home by bottom side Montrose with Queen’s Park finally winning at home with a Frankie Carroll goal giving them a 1-0 win over East Stirling, who missed an early penalty when Andy Rodgers’ effort was saved.

Forfar’s poor run ended with a 2-1 win over Annan with Ross Campbell and Ian Harty having the Loons two up before David Cox pulled a goal back.
