IRN-BRU Third Division review

Rangers and Elgin continue as top two

Rangers survived an early scare when Rory McAllister hit crossbar in the opening minutes, albeit the offside flag was raised before the Ibrox side won 2-0 against Peterhead at Ibrox.

The Ibrox side broke the deadlock two minutes before the interval when Lee McCulloch added to his impressive tally for the season when he rose to power home a header from a Barrie McKay corner

Lee Wallace made it two after 66 minutes when he collected from Ian Black's free-kick and unleashed a low shot past Mark McCallum to deliver a blow to the Blue Toon's hopes of a comeback.

Elgin City continue in second place the Third Division with their 3-1 win over visitors Berwick Rangers keeping them within two points of Rangers although the Borough Briggs men have played one more game than the Ibrox side.

The far travelled borderers thought they had opened the scoring in the north after Daniel Lavery had prodded in, however an offside call cut short their celebrations with their frustration at the decision added to on 16 minutes when midfielder Mark Nicolson opened the scoring with a well-placed 20 yard chipped shot.

Ross Gray turned in a Lavery cross to level within 2 minutes later, however Stuart Leslie had Elgin winning by half-time when ha tapped home following good work by Daniel Moore.

Berwick refused to lie down and hit the bar on the hour, Lee Currie clipped a post with a free kick and Sean Crighton cleared off the line before substitute Dennis Wyness ensured the win with a last minute strike.

Elgin boss Ross Jack said, “I am delighted with the win as we had to dig deep for it. Berwick played well but we kept our shape and stayed strong to get the 3 points.”

Annan moved into third place with a 5-2 win over a Stirling Albion that finished with only 9 men.  Goalkeeper Sam Filler was sent off with score-line blank midway through the first half and Ally Love netted past replacement Mark Peat shortly afterwards.

Scott Chaplain made it two before half time with Albion fighting back in the second half through a Graham Weir goal after Gary Thom was given a straight red card.

Kieran McGachie made it 3-1, however Stirling rallied again and a share of the points could have been on after Stephen Day grabbed a second until Michael Daly and Love added further Annan goals.

Montrose moved up the table thanks to a 2-1 success at Clyde where Jamie Winter hit home a late winner after Craig McLeish and Pat Scullion had traded goals.
