Chris Kane’s missed penalty against Alloa in the Scottish Cup denied the on-loan St Johnstone striker the chance of emulating a record that has stood since 1890.
Kane had scored in his first five matches for the Sons and if he had found the net against the Wasps he would have matched the feat of John Taylor, who scored in his first six games when the Scottish Football League started nearly 124 years ago.
Taylor scored on his Dumbarton debut when they secured a 1-1 draw with Cowlairs then netted against Third Lanark, Hearts, Rangers, Vale of Leven and Abercorn to mark his first half a dozen games as a Son with a goal.
Kane had scored against Morton, Cowdenbeath, Alloa, Hamilton Accies and Livingston but Taylor’s record remains after the 19-year-old drew a blank at Recreation Park.
Club historian Jim McAllister said: “Not since the first ever season of organised league football in 1890/91 had a Dumbarton player scored in his first six consecutive matches, when John Taylor managed it.”
Kane can still be a record breaker at Dumbarton as McAllister advised: “John does not have the record for scoring in back-to-back matches for a player not playing for the first time. That was set back in the 1971/72 season when Kenny Wilson scored in 12 games in a row.
“We have 13 league games and at least one Scottish Cup tie left to play, so perhaps Chris can beat Kenny’s record!”
