Steven Naismith's 18th-minute goal was enough to give Rangers a 1-0 win over Turkish side Bursaspor at Ibrox in Group C of the Champions League on Wednesday night.
The Scotland internationalist pounced from close range after Kirk Broadfoot had nodded Steven Whittaker's cross-field pass into his path to give the hosts a deserved breakthrough.
Kenny Miller and Maurice Edu came close to adding to Rangers' lead against the Turkish champions, who failed to get the better of a defence that also shut out Manchester United.
Rangers now face Valencia at Ibrox on matchday 3 on Wednesday October 20, with the Spaniards having lost 1-0 at home to Manchester United this evening.
Ibrox boss Walter Smith said: "I am just happy that we have won. Whatever faults we have, no one can fault our work rate and that's what delights me more than anything.
"I felt we looked solid at Manchester United. We decided to stay with that and managed to get up the pitch better. We went some way to achieving the right balance but have got some way to go."
Bursaspor manager Ertugrul Saglam said: "If you look at the game in general we deserved a draw. "The first goal was a defensive mistake but we were happy with the second half. We pressed well and did everything but score a goal - our finishing was poor."
