Nine days to go

Resident statto @splstats continues his countdown to the 2022/23 league season...

•    Cove Rangers No 9 Mitch Megginson finished as the top scorer in the 2021/22 cinch League 1 season. Megginson netted 18 goals in the league, two more than team-mate Rory McAllister, as Cove won the title and secured promotion to the cinch Championship. Megginson also finished as top scorer in the 2020/21 campaign, and will no doubt be seeking a hat-trick despite stepping up a level.

•    Queen of the South will return to cinch League 1 after nine seasons in the cinch Championship. The Doonhamers have spent 19 of the last 20 seasons in the second tier, with their only visit to the third tier being back in 2012/13. Willie Gibson and his side will be hoping that this campaign is as productive as that one – QOS won the league by 25 points and also secured the Challenge Cup.

•    St Mirren finished in ninth place in the 2021/22 cinch Premiership, finishing a comfortable nine points clear of the relegation play-off spot. Saints have finished in the top 10 of the cinch Premiership for three consecutive seasons – the last time they achieved this was 32 years ago. Back then, they had a run of 13 consecutive top-10 finishes, which started when they were promoted under Alex Ferguson in 1977 and did not end until 1990. Stephen Robinson will be hoping that this is the year that Saints secure a long-awaited top-six finish – the last time they achieved this was back in 1984/85.

•    Elgin City will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing ninth place finish in last season’s cinch League 2. This will be City’s 23rd consecutive season in this division since being elected to the SFL in 2000, making them the longest-serving club in any division outside of the top flight. Last season’s position was their lowest finish in nine years – they had finished in third place in each of the previous two campaigns.

•    Kelty Hearts No 9 Nathan Austin scored 17 times in cinch League 2 last season to finish as the division’s top goalscorer. Austin’s goals helped his side secure the league title and gain promotion to cinch League 1, the division in which Austin made his SPFL debut for East Fife back in 2013.
