Nisbet and Henderson win Tartan Boots

Raith Rovers forward Kevin Nisbet and Edinburgh City striker Blair Henderson are celebrating after winning the inaugural SPFL Tartan Boot award for their goalscoring achievements during 2018/19...

The special edition Tartan Boot award, created in partnership with SPFL Official Match Ball supplier Mitre, was introduced this season to recognise the top goalscorers across all four SPFL divisions.

Over the course of nine months and 36 league games, there was nothing to separate the two strikers, who both bagged 30 league goals for their respective clubs across the season.

After a blistering start to the season, 24-year-old Henderson surpassed his goal tally of 16 from last season by November and recorded his best season to date after signing from fellow Ladbrokes League 2 outfit Annan Athletic.

Nisbet, who began his career at Partick Thistle, signed for the Kirkcaldy men last summer and played an instrumental part in their Ladbrokes League 1 campaign, helping Rovers secure a Championship play-off spot with a third-place finish.

Both players played their part in what was another memorable SPFL season, during which 2,038 goals were scored across all four leagues.

Meanwhile, Rangers’ Alfredo Morelos received the Ladbrokes Premiership Tartan Ball award for closing the season as the division’s top scorer, finishing with 18 goals, after fighting off close competition from Aberdeen’s Sam Cosgrove, Celtic’s Odsonne Edouard and a late surge from Motherwell’s David Turnbull.

Morelos joins Lawrence Shankland (Ladbrokes Championship), Nisbet (Ladbrokes League 1) and Henderson (Ladbrokes League 2) as the proud winners of their leagues’ 2018/19 SPFL Tartan Ball awards.

Neil Doncaster, SPFL chief executive, said: “Congratulations to both Kevin and Blair for winning the inaugural Tartan Boot award, and to Alfredo for finishing as top goal scorer in the Ladbrokes Premiership.

“This has been a great season of SPFL football, and the amount of goals scored is a marker of that. We’ve been treated to a very high standard of exciting football across all four leagues.”

Raith Rovers’ Kevin Nisbet said: “It’s an incredible honour to be recognised by the SPFL for my goalscoring achievements this season, and to share the very first Tartan Boot award with Blair.

“Getting regular game time at Stark’s Park has been key to my development as a striker this season, and I’m glad I’ve been able to repay the faith shown in me by the management.

“I'd also like to thank my team-mates, who have contributed massively by creating opportunities for me to score from.”

Edinburgh City’s Blair Henderson said: “I’m over the moon. This has been the best season of my career so far, I couldn’t have done it without our fans’ support.

“Both Kevin and I have been neck-and-neck for most of the season. I thought I could edge it but I’m pleased to share the award with him.

“There’s been a real buzz about the club this season, and I think that has shone through in my performances.”

Simon Rowe, Head of Sports Marketing for Mitre, said: “These awards offer us an opportunity to celebrate another fantastic season in partnership with the SPFL and recognise some of the players who’ve provided great entertainment with the Mitre Delta. Congratulations to this season’s winners!"
