O'Connor signs for Berwick again

Berwick hero takes on bench role

Goalkeeper Gary O’Connor, who already held the record for being the most re-signed player at Berwick Rangers, has added a sixth spell at Shielfield to his CV.

O’Connor, who started his career at Hearts back in 1992 and also played for Doncaster Rovers, Dundee, Partick Thistle, East Fife, Cowdenbeath and Raith Rovers, joined the Borderers in the summer as their goalkeeping coach.

Manager Ian Little was forced into signing the 39-year-old when Hibs denied permission for on-loan Paul Grant to play and injuries robbed him of two reserve team shot-stoppers ahead of Saturday’s Scottish Cup tie with Peterhead.

O’Connor sat on the bench as Berwick won 2-1, with Little saying: “Gary always seems to end up as a player at Berwick. He joined as a coach during the summer and we both agreed then that playing should be left to the other goalies - however we had to change that at the end of last week.

“He played junior for Newtongrange over the past couple of years so he would have done us a turn if required.”
