Hibernian Celtic Premier Sports Cup

Premier Sports Cup final in numbers

Some of the stats ahead of Sunday's big game between Hibernian and Celtic at Hampden Park, which is live on Premier Sports with a 3.00pm kick-off...

76 - This is the 76th season of the League Cup, currently sponsored by Premier Sports. The competition was first held in 1946/47, with Rangers beating Aberdeen 4-0 in the final. The Ibrox club have won the trophy a record 27 times, with their last success coming against Celtic in 2010/11.

19 - Celtic have won the League Cup on 19 occasions, most recently two years ago when they defeated Rangers 1-0. Christopher Jullien scored the only goal of the game on the hour mark and Hoops keeper Fraser Forster saved a penalty from Alfredo Morelos.

3 - Hibernian have won the League Cup three times. Eddie Turnbull led them to a 2-1 victory over Celtic in 1972/73, Alex Miller was in charge for the 2-0 win against Dunfermline Athletic in 1991/92 and John Collins was at the helm when Hibs thrashed Kilmarnock 5-1 in 2006/07. They last reached the final in 2015/16 but lost 2-1 to Ross County. Caretaker boss David Gray, who famously scored the winner against Rangers in the 2016 Scottish Cup final, will take the team on Sunday.

9 - The last League Cup final meeting between Celtic and Hibernian was in October 1974 and produced nine goals, with the Hoops winning 6-3. Dixie Deans scored a hat-trick for Jock Stein's side and Joe Harper netted a treble for the Easter Road club.

1 - The last three League Cup finals have all ended 1-0. Shaun Rooney was the St Johnstone scorer against Livingston last season, Christopher Jullien netted for Celtic against Rangers two years ago, and Ryan Christie was the matchwinner when Celtic beat Aberdeen in the 2018/19 final.

3 - The last player to score a hat-trick in a League Cup final was Henrik Larsson 20 years ago. The Swedish striker netted a treble when Celtic beat Kilmarnock 3-0 in the 2000/01 final en route to the Treble in Martin O’Neill’s first season as manager.

4 - Martin Boyle has scored four goals for Hibernian on the way to Sunday’s final. The Australia internationalist was on target in the 3-1 quarter-final win against Dundee United and hit a hat-trick in the first half of the semi-final as Hibs beat Rangers 3-1. Boyle has scored 14 goals in all competitions for the Easter Road men in 2021/22.
