Premier Sports Cup - Ones to Watch

The Premier Sports Cup group stage is almost upon us! With competitive football returning to the SPFL this weekend, we thought we’d take a closer look at some summer additions who will be looking to light things up for their new clubs.

Bojan Miovski – Aberdeen
The Dons signing an international centre-forward from North Macedonia feels very ‘early 2000s’. But Pittodrie’s new boy comes with an already impressive CV at just 23 years old. With 11 goal contributions in 30 Hungarian top-flight games for previous employers MTK Budapest, Miovski will aim to add productivity to the Dons’ forward line. Though 6ft 2in tall, the striker is no slouch. With great mobility, stellar technique, and a strong physical presence, Miovski looks tailor made for the trials and tribulations of Scotland’s top tier. A strong showing and a goal or two in Sunday’s opener at Balmoor could kick-start the striker’s (and Aberdeen’s) season!

Ben Purrington – Ross County
Malky Mackay has been extremely active in the summer transfer market, with the Staggies keen to repeat, and potentially improve upon last season’s sixth-place finish. Purrington joins from EFL League 1 side Charlton Athletic, where he spent three seasons after a successful loan spell in 2019. An extremely competent and steady left-sided defender, Purrington ranked highly among his L1 peers last season in defensive statistics such as recoveries and defensive duels. With an array of new attacking talent arriving in Dingwall, Purrington will be looking to add a bit of extra steel to the defensive side of the team.

Kerr McInroy – Kilmarnock
From one side of Ayrshire, to the other. McInroy spent the second half of last season on loan at Killie’s fierce rivals, Ayr United. This came after spending the previous five months in Airdrie, also on a temporary basis. After a few successful loan stints, McInroy has found a new permanent home at Rugby Park. An extremely talented young midfielder with a great range of passing, as well as wonderful striking ability on his wand of a left foot. McInroy’s career progression saw him make the transition from League 1 to the Championship look easy. The 21-year-old will be keen to make an impact in his maiden top-flight campaign.

Dylan Easton – Raith Rovers
cinch League 1 Player of the Year Dylan Easton has continued his rise through the leagues by following Airdrieonians gaffer Ian Murray to Raith Rovers. While his 2021/22 season finished in play-off defeat, Easton had a stellar season for the Diamonds. Quite aside from his eight goals from midfield, the play-maker's sterling work both in and out of possession was a key facet of Murray's dynamic Airdrie side, who racked up an incredible 20-game unbeaten streak.

Steven Boyd – Inverness CT
Billy Dodds moved swiftly to add Alloa Athletic's Steven Boyd to the Highland promotion chasers. Breaking through at Accies, he racked up almost 50 Premiership appearances for the Lanarkshire side, before spending time in League 1 with East Fife, Peterhead and Alloa Athletic. A scorer of great goals, Dodds will be hoping the 25-year-old forward will fill the Logan Chalmers shaped hole in the Caley Jags squad.

Jair Tavares - Hibernian
Hibernian manager Lee Johnson described the addition of Benfica B forward Jair Tavares as a 'real coup' for his squad. Predominantly a left winger, but comfortable on either side, Tavares has been capped by Portugal from Under-15 to U19 level. Johnson will be hoping Tavares adds some pace and craft to Hibernian's front-line, with the wide man signed up for four years.
