Queen’s Park have moved quickly to end rumours they were looking to end nearly 150 years of tradition and start paying their players.
Supporters of Scotland’s oldest club, which was formed in 1867 and has stuck steadfastly to its motto of "Ludere Causa Ludendi" - to play for the sake of playing - were alarmed by stories that a change to the club’s constitution was being proposed at next month’s AGM.
The Spiders, who remain the only amateur side in senior football in Britain, look set to end this season at the bottom of the four divisions for only the second time in their history.
A similar position next year would see the Hampden club have to face a play-off against either the Highland or Lowland League winners to retain their SPFL status.
General Manager Christine Wright said: “We are not sure where these rumours have come from but there is no substance to them. The AGM is being held in May but there are no plans to look at the payment of players at it.”
