Road to Hampden: Rangers were 3-0 winners away to East Fife in the last 16 then beat Livingston 1-0 at the Tony Macaroni Arena. Hearts defeated Motherwell 2-1 at Fir Park and triumphed on penalties in the quarter-final against Aberdeen after it finished 2-2 at Tynecastle.
League Cup pedigree: Rangers have won this competition a record 27 times but not since 2010/11. They have lost at the semi-final stage in each of the last three seasons. Hearts have lifted this trophy four times but their last success was back in 1962/63 under Tommy Walker.
Past meetings: It was 1-1 when the teams met in the Ladbrokes Premiership at Tynecastle a fortnight ago. This is their first League Cup encounter since Rangers won the 2007/08 semi-final 2-0. The Ibrox club have won 15 of the 20 meetings in this competition – Hearts’ last win was 4-2 in August 1965.
Recent form: Steven Gerrard’s side won 4-0 at Ross County in midweek and are behind Premiership leaders Celtic only on goal difference. Hearts parted company with manager Craig Levein after Wednesday’s 1-0 loss to St Johnstone and Austin MacPhee is in caretaker charge.
