It was a case of Albion Rovers One and the SFA One in the Appeal hearings into the dismissal of Coatbridge goalkeepers Derek Gaston and Chris Fahey at Arbroath last weekend. Both shot-stoppers were red-carded by whistler John Beaton for challenges on Lee Sibanda with Gaston going off after 4 minutes and his replacement Fahey joining him 11 minutes into the second half with Paul Sheerin’s side running out 6-2 winners.
At Hampden yesterday it was decided that Gaston’s challenge should be downgraded to a yellow card whereas as Fahey’s dismissal stood.
Rovers boss Paul Martin had mixed emotions saying, “The decision on Derek shows that the appeal process works. Whilst the referee made an error, and made it only 4 minutes into the game, at least it has been recognised and Derek is available for the weekend.”
“We do feel however that with Chris it was only a potential goalscoring opportunity and not an obvious one. We are also surprised at that decision as we had players in close proximity and that the Arbroath player did not have the ball under control. The panel did so that is that.”
