The SPFL was saddened to hear of the untimely death of Sandy Jardine after a courageous battle with cancer.
Neil Doncaster, SPFL CEO, said: “Sandy’s football career was one of the most illustrious and long-lasting in the modern Scottish game. His many highlights included playing in two European finals for Rangers, winning the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1972, having been a runner-up in 1967 when only 18.
“Sandy was also Scottish Player of the Year with two different clubs - Rangers in 1975 and with Hearts, at the remarkable age of 37, in 1986. He was also a member of the Scotland World Cup squad which jointly won the accolade in 1974 and was elected to the Scottish Football Hall of Fame in 2006. His passing is a great loss to Scottish football and our thoughts are with his family at this time.”
Iain Blair, SPFL Secretary, added: “I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to get to know Sandy a little over the past 15 years. He was a true gentlemen who behaved with dignity and kindness at all times. Legend is an overused word in football but Sandy Jardine could only be described as a Rangers Legend. My thoughts are with Sandy’s family at this difficult time."
