Striker hangs up his boots

East Stirling striker Joe Savage has decided to end his second spell at the Third Division club and to retire from football. The 27-year-old had recently taken a sabbatical to consider his options after not featuring prominently for John Coughlin’s side this season and as has decided to call it a day.

Joe Savage in action for East Stirlingshire (2007)Savage who also had a youth coaching role at the club is walking away from football completely with club chairman Tony Ford saying, “Joe signed for us for a second time in the summer but has rarely featured in the first team this season. He had considered a career in coaching and we had given him the opportunity to become part of the under-19 coaching set-up but he now wishes to pursue his life away from football.”

“To our fans Joe will always be a cult hero for his performances in the 2007/08 season when we got off the bottom of the SFL. We all had hoped he would be able to pick up this season where he left off but sadly that did not turn out to be the case.”

Ford added, “On behalf of everyone at the club I would like to thank Joe for the contribution he has made and he has left the Shire fans with some happy memories.”
