Scotland tops European attendance per capita stats in UEFA report following record crowds

Scottish football leads the way for attendance per capita in Europe

For the third year in a row, football fans across Scotland have recorded significantly higher top-flight attendances per capita than any other league in Europe, a new UEFA report published today has revealed.

The SPFL’s William Hill Premiership welcomed 18.5 attendees per 1,000 people at matches in season 2024/25 – a five per cent rise on the previous season, after welcoming record crowds across the campaign.

This attendance per capita is more than 70 per cent higher than any other league on the continent, with Portugal ’s Primeira Liga in second place, with 10.7 attendees per 1,000 people.

In third place was Netherlands' Eredivisie with 9.77 matchgoers per 1,000 people, followed by England’s Premier League with 6.97 attendees per 1,000 people.

The report further found that the 3.9 million fans that attended top-flight matches in Scotland last season was the eighth-highest in the whole of Europe, with the average league attendance of 17,303 the seventh highest on the continent.

The five per cent year-on-year rise in attendance in Scotland’s top flight last season was above the European average rise of three per cent, and the joint ninth highest rise amongst the twenty highest attended leagues on the continent.

The overall yearly attendances and weekly averages for European leagues are contained within UEFA’s annual “The European Club Talent and Competition Landscape” report, which was published today. The report was first launched in 2023, and Scotland have recorded the highest per capita attendance stats in all three years.

SPFL group chief executive Neil Doncaster said: “It’s fantastic to see that the SPFL William Hill Premiership continues to lead Europe by some distance in attendances per capita.

“The passion of Scottish football supporters across the SPFL’s four divisions is rightly renowned, and they deserve enormous credit for their phenomenal commitment to our national game.

“Scottish football attendances have consistently punched well above their weight for many years. After three record-breaking seasons for attendances, we are looking to build on that momentum throughout this season.”

A total of 5,336,353, supporters turned out to watch their teams across all SPFL competitions in season 2024/25 – the highest figure in the SPFL era and a rise of nearly 185,000 on the previous record set the previous season.
