Season review 1999/00

The second SPL season saw Dick Advocaat's Rangers retain their crown by some distance

The second SPL season brought with it new challenges and new success stories but there was little change at the top of the Bank of Scotland Premierleague.

Dick Advocat's Rangers were at the peak of their success and were only beaten twice all season, eventually running away with their second consecutive title.

At Celtic Mark Viduka impressed throughout the season eventually finishing as the league's top goal scorer.

Although Aberdeen suffered a disappointing season they achieved success in both domestic cup tournaments where they reached both the Scottish Cup and League Cup Finals.

Despite a valiant effort, Celtic struggled to break Rangers supremacy under the guidance of John Barnes. They only took one point from a possible 12 against Rangers and the John Barnes and Kenny Dalglish era was to end prematurely.  Celtic's disappointment was added to when Henrik Larsson suffered a double leg break in October, ruling him out for the season.

Motherwell and Hearts battled it out for third place with Hearts in poll position for the majority of the season.  An impressive run towards the end of the season, however, allowed Billy Davies' Motherwell to climb to within touching distance.  Despite defeating Rangers on the last day of the season, Hearts managed to hang on to third spot.

Keigan Parker was amongst the young talent on show in the SPL, alongside Tom McManus, Peter Canero and Stephen Hughes.
