Montrose’s stand-in boss George Shields is hoping he will emerge as a candidate for the vacant manager’s position even though he does not know if he wants the job yet.
Shields has stepped up from his assistant’s job at Links Park in the wake of Stuart Garden's departure and he will guide the side until the end of the season.
The former Dundee Violet manager and coach at Brechin City is hoping the work he has done at various levels of the Links Park club will see him viewed as a candidate.
He said: "I have been at Montrose for a number of years now, firstly as Head of Youth when Steven Tweed brought me in. I helped develop Aaron Taylor-Sinclair and Martin Boyle into full-time players and, as bringing your own players through is really important, I would hope that would stand me in good stead if I apply.
“I have been working with the first team since Ray Farningham was the manager, firstly as a coach and then as assistant manager under Stuart.”
Former Cove Rangers boss Kevin Tindal and Dundee’s former Scotland midfielder Gavin Rae have been linked with the job with Shields adding: “Nothing will be happening until the end of the season so I have plenty of time to decide if I will go for the job.
“If I do, I would like to think that my knowledge of Montrose and how it works would make me of interest to the Board.”
