Smith becomes fan as opposed to player

Albion Rovers striker calls it a day

Iain SmithAlbion Rovers striker Iain Smith, who had every bone in his face broken in an accidental training ground clash back in March, has called time on his career. The 31 year old, who had six titanium plates inserted after his injury, had re-joined his Coatbridge colleagues for pre-season training however, he has decided to hang up his boots.

Cliftonhill boss Paul Martin said, “It is not a surprise that Iain does not want to play anymore however, it was still disappointing news as he is a really popular figure in the dressing room. He came in to training and gave it a go but decided playing again was not for him and we all respect his decision.”

“I am delighted that he can take away with him the fact that he was part of an Albion Rovers squad that won promotion for the first time in more than 20 years and I am sure he will treasure that. I had asked Iain if he wanted to do some work for the club in looking at players and opponents but he said he would rather come and watch us play. That shows the bond he had with the squad.”
