Tennent's Scottish Cup First Round Reviews

Spartans are giant killers - yet again!

Non league Spartans again proved giant killers as they knocked out third division leaders Berwick Rangers in an exciting Tennent's Scottish Cup clash.

And Donal Henretty was their goalscoring hero to leave the east side celebrating as they set up a visit to Highland League Lossiemouth in the next round.

There was no fluke about their win for it was Spartans who took hold early with both Phil Johnson and Jon Seely coming close. And the deadlock was broken in 61 minutes when Henretty volleyed a Daniel O'Donnell cross into the net.

But there was no happy return to the Scottish cup for former Inverness and Aberdeen manager Steve Paterson now in charge of Forres. For Dumbarton were in no mood for an upset as Iain Russell, a double from Andy Rodgers and another from Paul McQuilter swept the second division side to a 4-1 win.

Morton were also in commanding form as they surged to a 3-0 win at Cowdenbeath. Derek Lilley led the way with a double with Jason Walker completing the scoring ten minutes from time. And Stirling Albion's recent good form continued as they beat Elgin City 2-1 although they had to depend on a late penalty save from keeper Myles Hogarth. Ross Forsyth pounced after 20 minutes to take a Paddy Connolly through ball in his stride to open the scoring and Connolly added the second before the interval. Substitute Chris Gardiner pulled one back with a 62nd minute header for Elgin.
