SPFL set for incredible cinch Championship final day

Queen's Park face Dundee in a top of the table last day title decider.

The SPFL is preparing for its first ever top of the table final day title decider – as nine teams across the cinch Championship still have it all to play for.

Dundee sit just two points ahead of Queen’s Park as they travel to Ochilview tomorrow night at 7.45pm for the huge winner takes all match, which will be shown live on BBC Scotland.

It is the first time in the SPFL’s history that the top two in any division will have played each other in a title decider on the final day.

It is also the first time it has happened in Scotland’s top four division in 20 years – when Greenock Morton defeated second placed Peterhead 1-0 in season 2002/3 to clinch the then Scottish Third Division title. There is something to play for in every match across the division, with final play-off spots still to be confirmed and two points separating third placed Partick Thistle down to Greenock Morton in sixth spot.

Hamilton Academical, who sit bottom on 30 points, travel to Gayfield Park to play eighth placed Arbroath knowing they need to get at least a point to avoid automatic relegation.

Cove Rangers, who sit in ninth spot on 31 points, have the chance to move out of the relegation play-off spot if they win at their Balmoral Stadium home against Greenock Morton on the night.

Neil Doncaster, SPFL chief executive, said: “Everyone at the SPFL is looking forward to Friday night’s cinch Championship final round of fixtures, which promises to be an evening of incredible drama.

“It marks the first time we’ve had the top two fight it out for the title in one of our divisions on the final day since the SPFL was formed in 2013, which makes this fixture extra special.

“It’s quite extraordinary that there is so much to play for right across the division, with every game either impacting the promotion race, or battle against relegation.

“We’d like to wish all clubs involved the best of luck and hope supporters enjoy our final round of fixtures.”
