SPFL Spotlight: Simon Murray

Arbroath striker Simon Murray dishes the dirt on team mates past and present in this week's SPFL Spotlight.

Scottish League 2 leaders Arbroath welcome third-placed Queen's Park to Gayfield on Saturday.

Striker Simon Murray has had a fantastic start to his career at Gayfield, with five goals in just nine starts and six substitute appearances since joining the Red Lichties in the summer.

The 22-year-old has inherited an eye for goal from his dad, Gavin, who scored goals at Montrose before getting a move to Hibernian. Murray junior began his career at Links Park before heading for Tayport Juniors and a spell in Australia.

What’s the best goal you have ever scored?
My best goal was also my first goal for Arbroath and it came against my former club Montrose. I scored the last goal in a 3-1 win at the start of the season and what made it special was the dummy I sold their goalkeeper when I went through on goal. I also hit a good volley against Clyde recently from a Dylan Carreiro cross, and that was decent as well, but I have to go with my first goal as my best one.

What’s the best game you have played in?
That was for Tayport against Ballingry in my Junior days. We won 3-2 and that game set us up for a run that saw us promoted under John McGlashan. Bobby Linn was on the opposite team that day and I mention my mazy dribble and goal in that game fairly often to him!

What is your favourite away ground?
I played at Hampden for Montrose and that was a bit special. I am looking forward to going back there and hopefully Queen’s Park will be back there when we travel to meet them in the league come January.

What is your favourite other sport?
I play a bit of golf and that is about it. I tried surfing when I was in Australia and it is a bit harder than it looks. I am also not the best of swimmers, so taking the board out to get a decent wave was not the easiest thing to do.

Which player in the world would you like to bring to Arbroath?
I would ask Lionel Messi to give up Barcelona and come here. Only because I cannot ask Bobby Linn as he is already here.

What is your favourite pre-match meal?
Tuna and pasta on top of a baked potato.

What is your favourite music?
I like a bit of dance music, especially Swedish House Mafia. Kevin Buchan does the tunes for the players and he usually does OK but every now and again we need to rein him in so he does not go too wild.

Who is the biggest moaner that you have played with?
That would have to be my mate Stephen McPhee, who I played with at Montrose and Tayport. He is a cracking lad but he does like a good moan.

Who is your most skilful team-mate?
Dylan Carreiro, who we have on loan from Dundee, is really good. He probably just shades it ahead of Bobby Linn.

Who is your worst dressed team-mate?
Goalkeeper David Crawford. He turned up in a horrific flowery shirt at our first team night out.

Who is the best trainer at Gayfield?
That is another new recruit who joined with me in the summer. Mark Whatley, who came from Spartans, works really hard.

Who is the best dancer at the club?
Scott McBride – well he thinks he is anyway!
