No ' fewer than a dozen SPL players of past and present are involved in the Euro 2008 Finals in Austria and Switzerland.
Of the four of currently play in Scotland, Celtic keeper Artur Boruc made a string of fine saves as Poland drew 1-1 with Austria while his team-mate Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink is involved with Holland.
Celtic’s Giorgos Samaras is in the squad for holders Greece, while Inverness CT striker Marius Niculae came on as a substitute in Romania’s 0-0 draw with France and will be hoping to upset the Italians this evening.
There are also eight players with previous SPL experience, among them Czech duo Libor Sionko – who scored against Portugal – and Rudi Skacel. Sionko, now at FC Copenhagen, can count Rangers among his former clubs while Hertha Berlin midfielder Skacel was a big favourite at Hearts.
Celtic legend Henrik Larsson (Helsingborg) remains a key player for Sweden while ex-Rangers midfielder Giovanni van Bronckhorst (Feyenoord) starred in Holland’s stunning 3-0 win over Italy.
Former Rangers defenders Jean-Alain Boumsong (Lyon and France) and Soti Kyrgiakos (Eintracht Frankfurt and Greece) are also at the Finals, as are ex-Rangers midfielder Rino Gattuso (AC Milan and Italy) and Poland’s former Celtic striker Maciej Zurawski, who is now with Greek side Larissa.
