It's all things Peterhead today, as we chat to Colin & Martin from the Blue Toon Podcast!
How would you assess your club's 22/23 season so far?
Martin - Disappointing, poor recruitment in the summer on the back of a lot of senior figures leaving has left us in a difficult situation. however, a new manager has come in and hopefully club can look upwards for the remainder of the season.
Colin – Hugely frustrating. Been a season that really hasn’t got going yet. Difficulty in signing players in the summer has caused a domino effect with results. Fingers crossed the new manager can turn things around quickly.
Main Man: Favourite current player and why
Martin - Danny Strachan – A local lad and does a lot within his local community with the younger supporters.
Colin – Jason Brown – We've seen him mature to the leader he has become in his time with the club and gives his all for the team, on and off the field.
What is your earliest memory supporting your club?
Martin - Seeing the team win the Highland League in 1999. I had just started watching the team and remember that being a successful season.
Colin – Memories of the old Rec (Recreation Park) watching players like Ivor Pirie and Stevie King.
Explain the nickname
Peterhead’s nickname is the “Blue Toon” and those who are born and bred in Peterhead are thusly known as “Blue Tooners”. This is named after the specific kind of stockings that fisherman once used to wear back in Peterhead’s fishing heyday.
Almost Famous – What is your club best known for?
Although the furthest away ground for most teams, our social club always seems to go over well with the travelling supporters.
Greatest Gaffer: Your favourite/most loved boss watching your team
Martin - Jim McInally. Although recently resigning, the success that he brought the club over his 11 years in charge can't go unnoticed and will be a long time before it is replicated.
Colin – Iain Stewart. Watching Peterhead at that time, you were always guaranteed goals. The mentality seemed that if the opponents scored then Stewart’s side would score 2 or 3. Very unlucky not to have secured back-to-back promotions in 2006.
Can you tell us one interesting fact about your club which other fans may not know?
Martin - Way back when the Peterhead board accepted an offer from Aberdeen to play a Scottish Cup tie at Pittodrie rather than PFC being at home. The players weren't happy and went on strike in protest. The board had to re-assemble a team and PFC suffered their biggest-ever competitive defeat.
Colin – Peterhead's first manager was Colin Grant in 1976. In the 85 years prior to this, a committee would select the team.
Who would make your ultimate all-time 5-a-side team?
Martin - Paul Mathers, Mark Perry, Willie Miller, Simon Ferry & Rory McAllister
Colin - Ivor Pirie, Stevie King, Graeme Sharp, Martin Bavidge & Rory McAllister
What is your all-time favourite match?
Martin – Beating Hearts in 2017 in the League Cup group stage.
Colin – Winning at Ibrox in 2013.
What should visiting fans make sure they see/do when visiting your club/town?
Martin – Peterhead Prison Museum.
Colin – As well as the many bars within walking distance of the stadium, visiting fans should of course sample the fresh fish from some of the chip shops in town. Won’t get any fresher!
What makes your club special to YOU?
Martin - Most match day employees are volunteers and show the community spirit within the town and the club itself. The club excel themselves with their community coaching that is often put on for the younger children.
Colin – It’s a cliché to say but it’s the sense of community that makes it a club/team you want to do whatever you can for.
