Morgaro Gomis scored twice as Dundee United beat bottom club Falkirk 3-0 at Tannadice on Saturday to move up to third place in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League.
David Goodwillie opened the scoring from the penalty spot and former Cowdenbeath midfielder Gomis sealed victory for Peter Houston's men to leave Falkirk two points adrift at the foot.
John Hughes' Hibernian were held to a 1-1 Easter Road draw by St Johnstone in a tale of two penalties. Top scorer Anthony Stokes gave Hibs the lead from the spot in just three minutes but Liam Craig converted an 85th-minute penalty to earn Saints a point in the capital.
Hearts made it three wins on the trot with a 1-0 victory at Pittodrie as Aberdeen's top-six hopes suffered a major blow. Jim Jefferies' men had Laryea Kingston sent off early in the second half but a spectacular Eggert Jonsson goal earned them a third away win of the season.
Motherwell's incredible run under Craig Brown continued as Jamie Murphy scored the only goal against Kilmarnock at Fir Park, just as he did against Hibernian last weekend. The Steelmen are now unbeaten in nine games and they have kept eight clean sheets in that period.
St Mirren, in 10th, remain a point ahead of Hamilton after the sides played out a 0-0 draw. Leaders Rangers face Celtic at Ibrox on Sunday in a crucial match - live on Sky at 12.30pm.
