2 – Rangers moved four points clear at the top of the Premiership thanks to a 2-0 victory away to Celtic. Connor Goldson scored both goals, becoming the first Rangers player to notch a double in this fixture since Steven Naismith in a 4-2 victory in September 2011. Steven Gerrard has led the Light Blues to back-to-back wins at Celtic Park for the first time in 25 years – the last time Rangers achieved this was in September 1995, when they won a League Cup tie 1-0 and Premier Division match 2-0 within 11 days of each other.
5 – St Johnstone defeated Hamilton Academical 5-3 at the Foys Stadium to climb off the foot of the Premiership table. Craig Conway scored his first double since the 2010 Scottish Cup final to add to two more from Stevie May and one from David Wotherspoon. Saints had only scored four goals in their previous 10 league matches, but more than doubled their tally to see off Accies. Saints’ previous match saw them defeat Brechin City 7-0 in the Betfred Cup – this is the first time in over 30 years that they have scored five or more goals in consecutive matches. The last time was in March 1990, when they defeated Albion Rovers 5-2 at Cliftonhill and Alloa Athletic 6-0 at McDiarmid Park on their way to winning the First Division title.
6 – Heart of Midlothian thumped Dundee 6-2 at Tynecastle on Friday night to kick off their Championship campaign in style. Robbie Neilson’s side are the first team to score six or more goals on the opening day of the second tier season since Gretna beat Hamilton Academical 6-0 in 2006/07. The Jam Tarts recorded their biggest win over the Dark Blues since September 1999, when goals from Stephane Adam, Darren Jackson, Colin Cameron and Scott Severin handed them a 4-0 victory at Tynecastle.
8 – League 2 Champions Cove Rangers marked their debut in League 1 with a 3-1 victory over East Fife at Balmoral Stadium. Last season’s League 2 top scorer Mitch Megginson continued where he left off by scoring the opening two goals, before Leighton McIntosh rounded off the victory. Megginson has now bagged doubles in four consecutive league matches – he netted twice in each of Cove’s final three league matches of last season. Overall, it was his eighth league double since Cove joined the SPFL in 2019, following three prolific seasons in the Highland League.
5 – Edinburgh City made an impressive start to the League 2 season with a 5-1 victory over Brechin City at Glebe Park. Five different players found the net for James McDonaugh’s side – Conrad Balatoni, Liam Brown, Blair Henderson, Josh Campbell and Danny Jardine were all on target. It was the first time City had scored five or more goals in a match in any competition since they joined the SPFL in 2016 – the last time they did so was back in November 2015 when they defeated Edinburgh University 5-0 in the Lowland League.
