Weekend in numbers

Resident statto @splstats looks at some of the numbers from the weekend...

1 – Ross County defeated Celtic 2-0 at Celtic Park to move into the quarter-finals of the Betfred Cup for the first time since they won it in 2015/16. Ross Stewart and Alex Iacovitti scored the goals to hand the Staggies’ their first ever victory at Celtic Park – in 13 previous visits they had lost 10 and drawn three. It was the first defeat Celtic had suffered in the competition since they lost to County in the semi-final at Hampden in January 2016. Sunday’s defeat ended Celtic’s run of 35 consecutive victories in domestic cup competitions, which started at the beginning of the 2016/17 campaign.

7 – St Mirren progressed to the quarter-finals of the Betfred Cup thanks to a 2-1 victory over Aberdeen at the SMISA Stadium. Jamie McGrath scored a late winner to ensure that Saints reached the last eight for the first time since they won the competition in 2012/13. Jim Goodwin’s side are now unbeaten in seven matches in all competitions – they have four wins and three draws since they lost to the Dons at Pittodrie in early October. Saints have recorded three consecutive victories for the first time since March 2018.

1 – Alloa Athletic defeated Heart of Midlothian 1-0 at the Indodrill Stadium to secure their passage into the quarter-finals of the Betfred Cup. Alan Trouten’s 109th-minute penalty was enough to seal the Wasps’ spot in the last eight for just the fifth time in their history. It was Alloa’s first ever victory over Hearts in any official competition, in what was their 20th meeting. The Wasps did beat the Jam Tarts 3-1 at Recreation Park in the Victory Cup (a competition set up to celebrate the end of WWII) in April 1946, but even then they subsequently lost the second leg 5-0 at Tynecastle.

4 – Partick Thistle moved to within four points of Falkirk at the top of League 1 thanks to a 1-0 victory over Montrose at Links Park. Connor Murray scored the only goal to hand Ian McCall’s side their first away win of 2020 – their last victory on the road came against Morton at Cappielow on December 28 last year. This was the Jags’ first league meeting with the Gable Endies since the 1991/92 Division 1 campaign – Thistle won four out of four in that campaign and 29 years later they have continued where they left off.

5 – Elgin City defeated Cowdenbeath 5-2 at Borough Briggs to keep themselves in second spot in League 2. It’s the first time Elgin have scored five goals in a league game since they defeated Berwick Rangers 5-1 in November 2017. Kane Hester scored three of the goals for City – it was his first ever hat-trick in the Scottish league, though he did net a treble for Elgin against Brechin in the Challenge Cup last season.
