William Hill Premiership

Weekend in numbers

Resident statto @splstats looks at some of the numbers from the weekend...

0 – Champions Rangers defeated Aberdeen 4-0 at Ibrox to complete an unbeaten season in the Scottish Premiership. It is just the fourth time in the history of the Scottish top flight that a club has achieved this feat – the first were Celtic in 1897/98, quickly followed by Rangers in 1898/99, with both 18-game seasons. Celtic completed an unbeaten 38-game season in 2016/17, and that achievement has been matched by Steven Gerrard’s side this year. Incidentally, there have been only two other unbeaten seasons in Scottish league history – Kilmarnock in the second tier in 1898/99 and Rangers in the third tier in 2013/14. The Light Blues conceded just 13 goals in their 38 matches this season – this works out at 0.34 goals per game, which is the lowest rate of any team in any division in the history of Scottish football.

6 – St Johnstone secured fifth place in the Premiership and a spot in Europe for next season courtesy of a 0-0 draw with Livingston at McDiarmid Park. Saints have now qualified for Europe in six of the last 10 seasons, having previously only taken part in continental competition on two occasions. Callum Davidson’s side ensured they would go into next week’s Scottish Cup final in good form – they have lost two just of their last 14 matches in all competitions and have kept clean sheets in eight of them.

3 – Ross County ensured their Premiership safety thanks to a 2-1 victory over Motherwell at Fir Park. John Hughes’ side won each of their last three Premiership matches to ensure they finished in 10th place, three points clear of Kilmarnock in the play-off spot. It was the first time the Staggies had recorded three straight top-flight wins since May-August 2017. It was no surprise to see County come from behind to win – in their final eight matches of the season they picked up 10 points from losing positions.

7 – St Mirren secured seventh place in the Premiership thanks to a 0-0 draw with Dundee United at the SMISA Stadium. Jim Goodwin led Saints to their highest league finish in over 30 years – the last time they finished as high as seventh in the top flight was in 1988/89 under Tony Fitzpatrick. The result extended their unbeaten run against United in Paisley to five league matches – the last time the Terrors came away with three points was in October 2016.

2 – Dundee sealed their place in the Premiership play-off final against Kilmarnock with a 3-1 aggregate victory over Raith Rovers. The Dee lost Saturday’s second leg 1-0 at Dens Park but had already all but secured victory thanks to a 3-0 win in the first leg in Kirkcaldy. James McPake’s side now have the opportunity to return to the top flight after two years in the Championship – if successful it would be their third promotion in the last decade.
