SPFL Trust Trophy

Weekend in numbers

Resident statto @splstats looks at some of the numbers from the weekend...

29 – Kilmarnock beat Falkirk 3-1 at the BBSP Stadium, Rugby Park to progress to round 3 of the SPFL Trust Trophy. Two goals from Fraser Murray and one from Jason Naismith were enough to see off their cinch League 1 opponents. Not counting B team appearances, this was Killie’s first game in this competition for 29 years, since they lost 2-1 at home to Morton in the quarter-finals back in October 1992. Killie are now unbeaten in their last four home matches against the Bairns – they’ve picked up three wins and a draw since their last defeat back in December 2009.

5 – Joint-holders Inverness Caledonian Thistle moved into round 3 of the SPFL Trust Trophy thanks to a 4-0 victory over Buckie Thistle at the Caledonian Stadium. Lewis Jamieson and Cameron Harper put Billy Dodds’ side two ahead before Billy Mckay rounded things off with a late double. This was just the second time the sides had met competitively – the first came in the Scottish Cup back in March when Inverness won 3-2. The Caley Jags have now recorded five consecutive victories in all competitions without conceding a single goal – this is their best run of clean sheets since September-November 2017.

6 – Montrose defeated Stirling Albion 1-0 at Links Park to reach the last 16 of the SPFL Trust Trophy. Graham Webster scored for the sixth match in a row (five of them penalties) to set up a home tie against Morton in the next round. This was the sixth time these sides have met in the Challenge Cup, and Montrose have won all six meetings, with the first being way back in 1992. Stewart Petrie’s side now have four wins and a draw in their last six matches in all competitions, with their only loss coming against Dumbarton last weekend.

5 – Alloa Athletic sealed their place in round 3 of the SPFL Trust Trophy with a 2-0 victory over Cowdenbeath at Central Park. Steven Boyd and Stefan Scougall scored the goals as Barry Ferguson’s side set up a clash with either Rangers B or Ayr United. The Wasps are now unbeaten on their last five visits to Cowdenbeath, picking up four wins and a draw. In fact, their only loss in their last 12 trips to Central Park came in this competition in July 2012 when the match finished 1-1 after 120 minutes but the Blue Brazil won on penalties.

4 – Albion Rovers thumped St Mirren B 6-0 at the Reigart Stadium to cruise into the last 16 of the SPFL Trust Trophy. Teenager Kyle Doherty scored four times against his former club, with the other two coming from Kieran Dolan and an Aiden Clocherty own goal. Doherty is the first play to score four goals in a game for Albion Rovers since John Gemmell in a 5-4 victory over East Stirlingshire at Firs Park in December 2007. Doherty is just the ninth player in the history of this competition to score four or more goals in a game – he joins Gerry Britton, Martin Cameron, Allan Russell, Andy Jackson, Paul Di Giacomo, Rory McAllister (5 goals), Craig Malcolm and Brian Graham.
