Weekend in numbers

Resident statto @splstats looks at some of the numbers from the weekend...

2 – Scotland secured second place in our World Cup qualifying group courtesy of a 2-0 victory over Moldova in Chisinau on Friday night. Rangers defender Nathan Patterson scored his first international goal, while Heart of Midlothian keeper Craig Gordon saved a late penalty to secure the win. Patterson was the first Rangers player to score for Scotland since Steven Naismith netted the winner in a 1-0 victory over Lithuania in September 2011. This is the first time Scotland have finished in the top two of a qualifying group since Euro 2004 qualifying.

1 – Dunfermline Athletic finally picked up their first win of the cinch Championship season courtesy of a 2-1 victory over Inverness CT at the Caledonian Stadium. Dom Thomas scored the winning goal for the Pars to close the gap on Morton and Queen of the South at the foot of the table to just two points. It was Dunfermline’s first league win over the Caley Jags in the Highlands since March 2007, when Stephen Glass (2) and Jim McIntyre scored the goals in a 3-1 victory in the SPL.

4 – Partick Thistle thumped Ayr United 4-0 at Somerset Park to climb to fourth in the cinch Championship table. Ross Docherty and Shea Gordon added to Brian Graham’s double to hand the Jags back-to-back wins in Ayrshire following their success in Kilmarnock last week. Ian McCall’s side are now unbeaten in seven league matches, a run which started with another 4-0 win over Ayr at the start of October. Thistle have now kept five straight clean sheets – they also achieved this in League 1 back in April, but the last time they did it in the top two tiers was in February and March 2013 on their way to the Division 1 title.

0 – Cove Rangers remain just a point off the top of cinch League 1 after defeating former Highland League rivals Peterhead 3-0 at Balmoral Stadium. Ryan Strachan opened the scoring for Cove before Mitch Megginson rounded off the win with two goals in the last 12 minutes. Paul Hartley’s side have a 100% record against the Blue Toon in SPFL league football – they have met four times and Cove have won all four without conceding a goal. Peterhead’s last league win over Cove was back in February 2000, when they won 1-0 in the Highland League, but they did win 3-1 in a Premier Sports Cup tie in July this year.

5 – Stenhousemuir defeated Annan Athletic 2-0 at Ochilview to move just a point behind their opponents in the battle for a promotion play-off spot in cinch League 2. Adam Brown and Euan O’Reilly scored the goals for Stephen Swift’s side as they continued their surge up the table. The Warriors have now recorded five consecutive wins in all competitions for the first time since August to September 2008, when John Coughlin’s men would ultimately gain promotion out of this division.
