Weekend in numbers

Resident statto @splstats looks at some of the numbers from the weekend...

5 – Greenock Morton thumped Dunfermline Athletic 5-0 at Cappielow to climb off the foot of the cinch Championship table. Dougie Imrie’s first home game in charge saw his side record their joint-biggest win over Dunfermline – they also beat them 5-0 in February 1980. The Ton had won just one of their previous 17 league matches before Saturday - that too was against the Pars, at East End Park in November. It was Morton’s biggest league win since they beat Queen of the South by the same scoreline in October 2016. The victory extended their unbeaten run against Dunfermline at Cappielow to 10 matches – their last defeat was back in March 2017.

20 – Inverness Caledonian Thistle left it late to snatch a 1-1 draw against Raith Rovers and move to within two points of Arbroath at the top of the cinch Championship. Ethan Ross gave Rovers the lead but a late equaliser from Reece McAlear ensured that Billy Dodds’ side remained second in the table. The Caley Jags are now unbeaten in their last 20 league matches against Rovers, a run which consists of 15 wins and five draws with a 43-11 aggregate scoreline. “Beautiful Day” by U2 was UK No 1 the last time Rovers beat Inverness in the league – that was back in October 2000, when Jay Stein and Ivan Mballa helped them to a 2-1 victory in the Highlands.

6 – Falkirk returned to winning ways in cinch League 1, thrashing Dumbarton 6-2 at the Falkirk Stadium to end a run of five straight defeats. An Anton Dowds hat-trick and goals from Callumn Morrison, Aaron Taylor-Sinclair and Aidan Keena helped Martin Rennie secure his first win as Bairns boss. It was Dowds’ first game back with Falkirk after a loan spell at Arbroath – he had scored just three times in 25 games prior to his loan but doubled that tally on Saturday. Dowds is the first Bairns player to score a hat-trick at the Falkirk Stadium since Declan McManus scored three against the same opposition in a 6-0 win in August 2019.

8 – Cove Rangers defeated Clyde 1-0 at Broadwood to extend their lead at the top of cinch League 1 to seven points. Iain Vigurs scored the only goal to hand the Toonsers their eighth consecutive league victory. Cove have kept clean sheets in seven of those eight matches – the only side who breached their defence were East Fife in a 4-2 Cove win on Boxing Day. Paul Hartley’s side are unbeaten in 14 matches in all competitions – they have picked up 11 wins and three draws since their last defeat in October.

4 – Stenhousemuir climbed into the final promotion play-off spot in cinch League 2 thanks to a 2-1 victory over Albion Rovers at the Reigart Stadium. Rovers took an early lead but a Thomas Orr double helped Stephen Swift’s side to their second consecutive away win. It was the first time Stenhousemuir had come from behind to win a league game since they beat Cove Rangers 3-2 in October 2019. The Warriors made a slow start to the season, with just five points from their opening eight fixtures, but they have picked up 21 from the last 12 games to move themselves into promotion contention.
