Weekend in numbers

Resident statto @splstats looks at some of the numbers from the weekend...

3 – Celtic moved three points clear at the top of the cinch Premiership thanks to a dramatic 3-2 victory over Dundee at Celtic Park. Giorgos Giakoumakis scored a hat-trick, the third of which came in the 86th minute, to extend the Hoops’ unbeaten league run to 21 matches. The last eight Celtic hat-tricks have been scored by eight different players – Giakoumakis followed in the footsteps of David Turnbull, Kyogo Furuhashi, Mohamed Elyounoussi, Odsonne Edouard, Leigh Griffiths, Ryan Christie and Scott Sinclair. Celtic are now unbeaten in their last 39 matches against Dundee in all competitions – the Dee’s last victory was back in May 2001.

15 – St Johnstone defeated Heart of Midlothian 2-1 at McDiarmid Park to climb off the bottom of the cinch Premiership. Goals from Ali Crawford and Jamie McCart helped Callum Davidson’s side record their first home win since October. Saints are unbeaten in their last 15 home matches against Hearts in all competitions, a run which now extends back over a decade. Hearts’ last win in Perth came in a Scottish Cup tie in February 2012, when Marius Zaliukas scored the winner in extra-time following Jamie Hamill’s stoppage-time equaliser.

19 – Ayr United moved further clear of the relegation places in the cinch Championship courtesy of a 2-1 victory over Inverness Caledonian Thistle at the Caledonian Stadium. Goals from Sean McGinty and Tomi Adeloye helped Lee Bullen’s side climb to seventh place and move six points clear of ninth-placed Dunfermline Athletic. This was the Honest Men’s first win in Inverness in 19 years – their last was back in January 2003, when Stewart Kean scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory.

16 – Cove Rangers defeated Falkirk 2-0 at Balmoral Stadium to maintain their five-point lead at the top of cinch League 1. Mitch Megginson and Fraser Fyvie scored the goals to ensure that Paul Hartley’s side continued their impressive run of league form. The Toonsers are unbeaten in their last 16 league matches – they have picked up 11 wins and five draws since losing to East Fife in October and have kept clean sheets in 12 of those matches. Cove are one of just four sides in the SPFL who remain unbeaten at home this season – the others are Celtic, Rangers and Kelty Hearts.

2 – Cowdenbeath beat Elgin City 2-0 at Central Park to boost their chances of survival in cinch League 2. An early Fraser Mullen penalty and a late strike from Andrew Barrowman gave Maurice Ross’ side a crucial victory which moved them just six points behind Elgin at the foot of the table, with three games in hand. The Blue Brazil have recorded back-to-back league victories for the first time since September and October 2019. Cowdenbeath have now picked up four wins and a draw in their last five home matches against Elgin.
