Weekend in numbers

Resident statto @splstats looks at some of the numbers from the weekend...

6 – Celtic moved six points clear at the top of the cinch Premiership thanks to a 2-1 victory over Rangers at Ibrox. Goals from Tom Rogic and Cameron Carter-Vickers helped the Hoops come from behind to secure a crucial victory in the title race. The result ended Celtic’s run of four straight defeats at Ibrox, with their previous win coming in September 2019. Ange Postecoglou’s side are now undefeated in 26 cinch Premiership matches – they have racked up 22 wins and four draws since losing to Livingston in mid-September.

7 – St Johnstone defeated Livingston 1-0 at McDiarmid Park to boost their chances of cinch Premiership survival. Callum Hendry’s penalty helped Callum Davidson’s side move six points clear of bottom club Dundee, and to within six points of Aberdeen and St Mirren in ninth and 10th position. Hendry has scored seven goals in 11 games since returning from his loan spell at Kilmarnock, including winning goals in each of the last two matches. This was the first time Saints have picked up back-to-back league wins in over a year, the last time being 1-0 wins over Hibernian and Ross County in March 2021.

3 – Raith Rovers won the SPFL Trust Trophy thanks to a 3-1 victory over Queen of the South at the Excelsior Stadium in Airdrie. Rovers had shared the trophy with Inverness Caledonian Thistle in 2019/20 after the pandemic left the final unplayed. A Matej Poplatnik double and a goal from Ethan Ross helped them win the trophy outright this time. This is Rovers’ third success in the tournament – they also won it in 2013/14, when they defeated Rangers at Easter Road.

3 – Montrose secured a promotion play-off spot in cinch League 1 thanks to a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Falkirk at The Falkirk Stadium. Lyall Cameron, Michael Gardyne and Ross Campbell scored the goals as Stewart Petrie’s side moved 15 points clear of the fifth-placed Bairns with just four matches remaining. The Gable Endies have picked up four wins and a draw in their last five matches against Falkirk, having won just one of their previous 17. Saturday’s success was their biggest ever win over the Bairns – they had never beaten them by more than a single goal.

7 – Forfar Athletic defeated Stranraer 2-0 at Stair Park to seal their place in the top four of cinch League 2. Craig Slater and Stefan McCluskey were on the scoresheet as the Loons moved out of reach of fifth-placed Stenhousemuir in the race for the play-offs. Gary Irvine’s side have suffered just two defeats in their last 10 matches, picking up four wins and four draws in that period. Forfar are now unbeaten in seven matches against Stranraer - they have picked up five wins and two draws since their last defeat in April 2019.
