Weekend in numbers

Resident statto @splstats looks at some of the numbers from the opening weekend of the 2022/23 League Season...

33 – Celtic defeated Aberdeen 2-0 at Celtic Park to kick off their cinch Premiership title defence with three points. Stephen Welsh and Jota were on the scoresheet for the Hoops, who made it 18 matches undefeated against the Dons in all competitions. Celtic have not lost at home on the opening day since 1950, when Morton earned a 4-3 win – since then they have played 33 matches and picked up 29 wins and four draws. Sunday’s win was their ninth straight opening-day home win – the last team to take a point at Celtic Park on the first weekend were Kilmarnock in 2007.

8 – Motherwell shook off their midweek disappointment to defeat St Mirren 1-0 at the SMISA Stadium in their cinch Premiership opener on Sunday. A Kevin van Veen penalty was enough to secure three points for Stevie Hammell in his first game as caretaker manager. The Steelmen are now unbeaten on their last eight visits to Paisley in all competitions – they have picked up four wins and four draws since they last tasted defeat in May 2015.

3 – Cove Rangers defeated Raith Rovers 2-0 at Balmoral Stadium to mark their cinch Championship debut in style. Last season’s cinch League 1 top scorer Mitch Megginson carried on where he left off by scoring both goals for Jim McIntyre’s side. Megginson has already matched his goal tally from the last season he played at this level – he scored just twice in 32 Championship appearances for Raith and Alloa in 2016/17. Saturday’s victory was Cove’s third consecutive victory over Rovers in all competitions – they also defeated them in the League Cup group stages in 2018/19 and 2019/20.

4 – Clyde made an impressive start to their cinch League 1 campaign by thumping Queen of the South 4-1 at Palmerston. Olly McDonald, Ross Cunningham, Jordan Allan and Euan Cameron were all on the scoresheet for the Bully Wee as they recorded their biggest opening-day win since 2003, when they defeated Ayr United 3-0 at Broadwood. Clyde scored four goals in an away match for the first time in over six years – the last time they did so was a 4-2 victory over East Stirlingshire in March 2016.

1 – Bonnyrigg Rose’s first ever SPFL match was a successful one as they defeated Forfar Athletic 2-0 at New Dundas Park in cinch League 2. Over 1,000 fans turned up to see goals from Kevin Smith and Scott Gray secure a victory for the Lowland League champions. Bonnyrigg are the third consecutive promoted club to win their opening cinch League 2 fixture – Cove Rangers and Kelty Hearts also picked up victories in their first SPFL match.
