Aberdeen Celtic

Weekend in numbers

Resident statto @splstats looks at some of the numbers from the weekend...

3 – Celtic thumped Hibernian 6-1 at Celtic Park to retain their two-point lead at the top of the cinch Premiership. Ange Postecoglou’s side maintained their 100% home league record thanks to three goals from James Forrest, two from Giorgos Giakoumakis and one from Daizen Maeda. It was Forrest’s third hat-trick for the Hoops – the previous two both came in 2018, against Partick Thistle in the League Cup and St Johnstone in the Premiership. Celtic are now unbeaten in their last 16 home matches against Hibs, picking up 12 wins and four draws since their last defeat back in January 2010.

6 – Aberdeen climbed to fourth in the cinch Premiership table thanks to a 2-0 victory over Heart of Midlothian at Pittodrie on Sunday. Late goals from Duk (Luis Lopes) and Vicente Besuijen gave Jim Goodwin’s side their sixth win in seven home matches this season. This was the Dons’ sixth consecutive home win against the Jam Tarts, a run that stretches back to April 2018. The only longer winning run for Aberdeen over Hearts at Pittodrie was seven consecutive games between 1952 and 1956.

6 – Inverness Caledonian Thistle defeated Cove Rangers 1-0 at Balmoral Stadium to go second in the cinch Championship. Steven Boyd scored the only goal of the game for Billy Dodds’ side, who are level on points with Partick Thistle at the top, and trail only on goal difference. Incredibly, only three points separate the top six sides in the division. The Caley Jags have now recorded six consecutive wins in all competitions – amazingly, this is the third time they have strung such a run together in the last 18 months – they also did it from March-April 2021 and again from July-September 2021. However, they are still four wins short of equalling their club record of 10 straight wins, set from March-July 2010.

1 – Dunfermline Athletic climbed to the top of cinch League 1 thanks to a 1-0 victory over FC Edinburgh at East End Park. Liam Fontaine’s own goal gave the Pars a crucial win which saw them leapfrog the visitors to move a point clear of them at the summit. This was the first time the Citizens had ever visited East End Park in the league, though they did lose 7-2 in a Scottish Cup tie in January 1998. The Pars remain the only SPFL club who are unbeaten in the league – they have picked up six wins and four draws in 10 matches.

5 – Stirling Albion beat Stenhousemuir 3-1 at Ochilview to move to the top of the cinch League 2 table. Dale Carrick scored for the fifth game in a row while Paul McLean and Aaron Dunsmore were on target late on as Darren Young’s side moved above early pacesetters Dumbarton on goal difference. The Binos have now recorded five consecutive wins, racking up an incredible 19 goals in the process. The last time they won five on the spin was over four years ago, back in January and February 2018.
