Weekend in numbers

Resident statto @splstats looks at some of the numbers from the weekend...

2 – Celtic and Rangers will face each other in next month’s Viaplay Cup final after both sides made it through tough semi-finals at Hampden. Celtic defeated Kilmarnock 2-0 on Saturday thanks to goals from Daizen Maeda and Giorgos Giakoumakis to make it to their seventh final in the last nine seasons. Ryan Jack and Kemar Roofe scored the goals as Rangers came from behind to beat Aberdeen 2-1 after extra time on Sunday to reach just their second final in the last 12 seasons. These sides last met in the final back in 2019/20, with Celtic running out 1-0 winners.

4 – Livingston climbed to fourth in the cinch Premiership courtesy of a 4-2 victory over St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park on Saturday. Stephen Kelly and James Penrice both scored doubles – the first time either player had done so in their career – to hand David Martindale’s side a second consecutive away win. This was the first time two Livi players both scored doubles in a top-flight match - the last time they did so in any division was back in August 2016 when Scott Pittman and Liam Buchanan notched twice in a 5-0 win over Stranraer in League 1.

1 – Hamilton Academical defeated Greenock Morton 1-0 at New Douglas Park to close the gap on Arbroath at the foot of the cinch Championship to four points. Andy Winter’s penalty ended a run of nine league matches without a win for John Rankin’s side – their last victory in the cinch Championship came against Inverness Caledonian Thistle in mid-October. All three of Accies’ league wins this season have come by that 1-0 scoreline – indeed each of their last five league wins have been 1-0, stretching back to March of last year.

4 – Alloa Athletic climbed back into the top four of cinch League 1 courtesy of a 2-1 victory over Edinburgh at the Indodrill Stadium. Conor Sammon scored both goals for Brian Rice’s side to take his tally for the season to 13, his best season since he scored 19 for Kilmarnock and Wigan in 2010/11. Brian Rice’s side have lost just one of their last 10 league matches – that was away to Edinburgh in November. Saturday’s success was the Wasps’ first ever league win over the Citizens – they had lost both previous meetings this season.

4 – Albion Rovers thumped Stranraer 4-0 at Stair Park to leapfrog their opponents into eighth place in cinch League 2. A double from Charlie Reilly and goals from Joe Bevan and Callum Wilson made it back-to-back 4-0 away wins for Brian Reid’s side, who are now three points clear of bottom club Bonnyrigg Rose. This is the first time in their history that Rovers have won consecutive away matches by a four (or more) goal margin.
