Weekend in numbers

Resident statto @splstats looks at some of the numbers from the weekend...

3 – Aberdeen defeated Heart of Midlothian 3-0 at Pittodrie to climb to fourth place in the cinch Premiership table. Two goals from Luis ‘Duk’ Lopes and one from Mattie Pollock inside the first 28 minutes ensured Barry Robson’s side made it three wins in a row. The last time the Dons scored three goals in the first half hour was in October 2020, in a 4-2 win over Hamilton Accies. Aberdeen have won each of their last seven home matches against Hearts, a run stretching back to April 2018. This equals their best ever run of results in this fixture – they also won seven in a row at Pittodrie between November 1952 and April 1956.

55 – Rangers continued their winning run in the cinch Premiership by defeating Motherwell 4-2 at Fir Park. James Tavernier, Fashion Sakala, Todd Cantwell and Malik Tillman were all on the scoresheet as Michael Beale’s side came from behind to make it nine league wins in a row. The Light Blues are now unbeaten in their last 55 league matches against the Steelmen, with their last defeat coming over 20 years ago, on Boxing Day 2002. Since then, Rangers have 40 wins and 15 draws against Motherwell in the league but did suffer defeats in both legs of a Premiership play-off and also a League Cup semi-final at Hampden.

6 – Raith Rovers thumped Cove Rangers 6-1 to keep alive their slim hopes of a top-four finish in the cinch Championship. Goals from Esmael Goncalves, Lewis Vaughan (2), Ryan Nolan, Dylan Easton and Scott McGill helped Ian Murray’s side climb back up to sixth in the table. This was the first time in over 30 years Rovers had scored six or more goals in a league match – the last time was a 7-0 victory over St Mirren at Stark’s Park in August 1992.

7 – Airdrieonians climbed back into the top four of cinch League 1 courtesy of a 7-0 drubbing of Peterhead at the Excelsior Stadium. Calum Gallagher netted a hat-trick, Gabby McGill scored twice and Craig Watson and Adam Frizzell also found the net as Rhys McCabe’s side made it 13 goals in their last two matches. This was the first time Airdrie had scored seven in a league game since they defeated Dundee by the same scoreline in March 2006. It’s just the fourth time in the last decade a side has scored six or more goals in consecutive league matches – the others were Dunfermline Athletic (Aug 2015), Peterhead (Dec 2017-Jan 2018) and Celtic (Aug 2021).

5 – Albion Rovers moved away from the foot of the cinch League 2 table thanks to a shock 5-1 away win over leaders Dumbarton. Doubles from Joe Bevan and Charlie Reilly, and a goal from Callum Wilson helped Brian Reid’s side move two points clear of bottom club Bonnyrigg Rose. Reilly took his tally to 20 league goals for the season – he is the first Rovers player to hit that mark since Alan Trouten in 2017/18. Rovers have won just four of their last 13 league matches but, strangely, each of those four wins has been by a margin of three or more goals – they beat Bonnyrigg Rose and Stranraer 4-0 in January and Elgin City 3-0 in February.
