Weekend in numbers

Resident statto @splstats looks at some of the numbers from the weekend...

53 – Celtic secured the cinch Premiership title for a second consecutive season thanks to a 2-0 victory over Heart of Midlothian at Tynecastle. Goals from Kyogo Furuhashi and Hyeongyu Oh sealed the three points which handed Ange Postecoglou his fourth trophy as Hoops boss. It was Celtic’s ninth consecutive victory over Hearts in all competitions – they have lost just once in their last 19 meetings with the Jam Tarts. Celtic have now been champions of Scotland on 53 occasions – this is their 11th title in the last 12 seasons and their 17th this century. The Hoops have 95 points from 34 matches – if they win their remaining four games they would reach 107 points, which would be a new league record.

7 – Motherwell defeated Kilmarnock 2-0 at Fir Park to all but seal their cinch Premiership safety for another season. Blair Spittal and Kevin van Veen were on the scoresheet to help Stuart Kettlewell’s side move nine points clear of the drop with just four games remaining. The Steelmen have picked up 20 points from 10 matches since Kettlewell took over in February. Van Veen’s goal took his season’s tally to 25 goals in all competitions, including 21 in the league. The Dutch goal-getter has found the net in seven consecutive matches – he is the first Motherwell player to do so since John “Dixie” Deans in the second tier in 1968/69.

1 – Dundee secured the cinch Championship title in thrilling fashion with a 5-3 victory over Queen’s Park at Ochilview on Friday night. A topsy-turvy encounter saw Gary Bowyer’s side take the lead within four minutes, only to be behind eight minutes later, and eventually go in level at 3-3 at half-time. However, second-half goals from Lyall Cameron and Luke McCowan secured the Dee’s immediate return to the top flight following last season’s relegation. It was the first time Dundee had scored five times in an away match since February 2017, when they beat Motherwell 5-1 at Fir Park. This is Dundee’s sixth time as second-tier champions – they most recently won this division in 2013/14 under Paul Hartley.

82 – Airdrieonians defeated Edinburgh 4-1 at Meadowbank Stadium to secure third place in cinch League 1. A double from Gabby McGill plus goals from Calum Gallagher and debutant Corrie Fellows set up a play-off semi-final clash with Falkirk. Gallagher finished the season on 22 league goals, making him joint top goalscorer in the division alongside Queen of the South’s Ruari Paton. The Diamonds netted 82 goals in cinch League 1 this season – by far the highest tally of any club in the lower three divisions, with the next best being Falkirk on 70.

3 – Bonnyrigg Rose secured their cinch League 2 status thanks to a 3-0 victory over Elgin City at New Dundas Park. A double from Kieran McGachie and a late Scott Gray goal ensured the newest SPFL club would remain in the league for a second campaign, and consigned Albion Rovers to a play-off against Spartans over the next fortnight. Robbie Horn’s side secured their safety with an impressive end to the season – they picked up four wins and two draws in their last seven matches and kept clean sheets in six of those games.
