Weekend in Numbers

Resident statto @splstats looks at some of the numbers from the weekend...

3 – Ross County climbed off the bottom of the cinch Premiership thanks to a 3-1 victory over Dundee United at Tannadice. Jordan White scored all three goals as his side leapfrogged their opponents into 11th place – they are two points ahead of United with three matches to go. It was White’s first ever top flight hat-trick, and it took him into double figures in the cinch Premiership for the first time in his career. The striker hadn’t netted three times in a game since December 2018, when he did so for Inverness against Edinburgh City in the Scottish Cup, and his last league treble came for Livingston against Alloa Athletic in the Championship in September 2014.

2 – Kilmarnock defeated Livingston 2-0 at the BBSP Stadium, Rugby Park to climb out of the bottom two of the cinch Premiership. Goals from Kyle Vassell and Daniel Armstrong handed Derek McInnes’ side a victory which leaves them a point ahead of Ross County and just two behind St Johnstone, who they host next weekend. The Ayrshire side had lost each of their last five matches against Livi – their last win against the Lions was back in October 2020. Killie have the best home record in the bottom six – Saturday’s success was their eighth home win of the season, and they have lost just four times in Ayrshire, three of which came against the top two sides in the division.

4 - Partick Thistle thumped Queen's Park 4-0 at Ochilview to secure their place in the cinch Premiership play-off semi-final against Ayr United. Goals from Brian Graham, Scott Tiffoney, Kevin Holt and Danny Mullen sealed an 8-3 accurate victory for Kris Doolan's side. Thistle became the first ever 4th placed side to win the quarter-final tie in these play-offs. The Jags have lost just one of their 15 matches since Doolan took over in February, and have scored four or more goals in four of their last eight games.

5 - Hamilton Academical came from behind to beat Alloa Athletic 5-2 at New Douglas Park and set up a Lanarkshire derby against Airdrie in the cinch Championship play-off final. Accies trailed 1-0 from the first leg and looked set for relegation when the Wasps scored twice more in little more than half hour on Saturday. However, four goals in the final eight minutes of the first half, two each from Dario Zanatta and Andy Winter, turned the tie on its head, and Winter added his third of the afternoon just after half-time. It was the first hat-trick of the 21 year-old forward’s senior career, and it took him into double figures for the season.

2 - Clyde kept their hopes of survival in cinch League 1 alive thanks to a 2-1 aggregate victory over East Fife in the play-off semi-final. Martin Rennie scored the winning goal with just over 10 minutes of extra time remaining to set up a play-off final against Annan Athletic. Clyde maintained their good record in play-off semi-finals - it's the fifth time out of six that they have made it through to the final. After a disappointing season, Jim Duffy's side appear to have hit form at just the right time - they have lost just one of their last eight matches, and that was a narrow defeat away to champions Dunfermline Athletic.

1 - Spartans and Albion Rovers battled to a 1-1 draw at Ainslie Park in the first leg of the cinch League 2 play-off final. Luke Graham gave Rovers the lead in the first half, but Ayrton Sonkur's own goal left the tie evenly poised ahead of Saturday's second leg in Coatbridge. There have been three previous occasions where the first leg has finished in a draw, and only one of those has led to a new side being promoted to the SPFL. Edinburgh City defeated East Stirlingshire to gain promotion in 2015/16, but Cowdenbeath stayed up in 2016/17 and 2017/18 after beating East Kilbride and Cove Rangers respectively.
