Premier Sports Cup

Weekend in numbers

Resident statto @splstats looks at some of the numbers from the weekend...

2 – Kilmarnock defeated Dunfermline Athletic 2-0 at East End Park to make it two wins out of two in the Viaplay Cup. Fraser Murray scored for a second consecutive game, before new captain Kyle Vassell made it four goals in his last three appearances to wrap up the victory. Killie are now unbeaten in their last five matches against Dunfermline in all competitions – their last defeat came in this competition in 2020, when Fraser Murray was on the scoresheet for the Pars. Derek McInnes' side have now won four matches in a row for the first time since March 2022.

4 – St Johnstone kept their hopes of Viaplay Cup progression alive thanks to a 4-0 win over Alloa Athletic at the Indodrill Stadium. Goals from Cammy Ballantyne, Ryan McGowan, Stevie May and 17 year-old debutant Ben McCrystal handed Steven MacLean's side all three points. It was St Johnstone's biggest away win in over five years, since they beat Motherwell 5-1 at Fir Park in May 2018, with Steven MacLean scoring a hat-trick in his final game for the club. Saints are now unbeaten in their last 15 away matches against the Wasps, with their last defeat coming way back in September 1958.

1 – Airdrieonians defeated Dundee 1-0 at the Excelsior Stadium to maintain their perfect start to their Viaplay Cup campaign. Player-manager Rhys McCabe scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot to make it six points out of six for the Diamonds. This is the third straight season that Airdrie have beaten Premiership opposition in the group stages of this competition - they defeated Motherwell in 2021/22 and St Mirren last season. The Diamonds are now unbeaten in their last five home matches against Dundee at the Excelsior, winning three and drawing two since their last defeat back in February 2007.

4 – Cove Rangers continued their perfect start to the Viaplay Cup group stage by coming from behind to beat Brechin City 3-2 at Glebe Park. Kyle Connell scored twice in the last 20 minutes to make it six points out of six for Paul Hartley's side. Connell also scored twice in the midweek win over Clyde - he is now the joint top goalscorer in this season's competition alongside Simon Murray of Ross County. Cove have now recorded five consecutive wins over Brechin in all competitions - their only loss to City came in the Challenge Cup back in August 2016.

5 – Stirling Albion defeated Stenhousemuir 2-1 at Forthbank to move back to the top of their Viaplay Cup group. Dale Carrick and Aaron Dunsmore scored the goals for Darren Young's side to make it seven points from their first three matches. The Binos have now recorded five consecutive victories against the Warriors in all competitions, which is the best run either side have ever had in this fixture. Stirling are now unbeaten over 90 minutes in their last 13 home matches, stretching back to November - their only setback in that period was their bonus point penalty shoot-out loss against Ayr United last week.
