1 – Kilmarnock defeated Celtic 1-0 at the BBSP Stadium, Rugby Park to move into the quarter-finals of the Viaplay Cup. Marley Watkins scored the only goal of the game to gain revenge for last season’s semi-final defeat and set up a home clash with Heart of Midlothian in the last eight. It was just the third time Killie have beaten Celtic in this competition – the others came in the 1964/65 group stage and the 2011/12 final. This was Brendan Rodgers’ first defeat as Celtic manager in a domestic cup competition – he had 24 wins out of 24 in his first spell. Killie are just the second club ever to record wins over both Rangers and Celtic before the end of August – the only other side to do so were Hibernian, who achieved this feat in both the 1972/73 and 1973/74 Drybrough Cup.
17 – Ross County sealed their spot in the last eight of the Viaplay Cup thanks to a topsy turvy 4-3 extra-time victory over Airdrieonians. Kyle Turner, Jordan White, Simon Murray and Eamonn Brophy were all on the scoresheet for the Staggies as they eventually saw off their cinch Championship opponents to set up a quarter-final at home to Aberdeen. County are by some distance the top-scoring side in this season’s competition, having found the net 17 times, and Murray is the competition’s leading scorer with seven.
3 – In the only cinch Championship game of the weekend, Queen’s Park defeated Arbroath 1-0 at Gayfield to maintain their perfect start. Ruari Paton scored the winning goal against the Red Lichties for the second consecutive week to move Robin Veldman’s side further clear at the top of the table. The Spiders have won their first three matches of the league campaign – the last time they did so in the second tier was back in 1970/71. Queen’s Park have now won on each of their last three visits to Gayfield – they secured victories on both of their trips last season.
3 – Hamilton Academical defeated Edinburgh City 3-0 at Meadowbank to maintain their 100% record in cinch League 1. Kyle MacDonald, Ryan One and Connor Murray found the net as John Rankin’s side picked up their third victory in three matches. This was the first ever league meeting of these sides, but they had played on three previous occasions in cup competitions, with Accies winning all three. The last time Hamilton won their opening three league matches of the season was back in 2013/14, when they ultimately gained promotion to the Premiership via the play-offs.
1 – Spartans picked up their first league victory as a cinch League 2 club with a 2-1 win over Elgin City at Ainslie Park. James Craigen and Rhys Armstrong scored the goals to give Dougie Samuel’s side all three points. Their only previous competitive meeting with Elgin had come in the 2015/16 Scottish Cup, when City defeated them 1-0 at Borough Briggs. Spartans remain unbeaten in the league this season – they kicked off the campaign with two draws before picking up their first win on Saturday. Incredibly, they are one of six teams in the division who have yet to lose a game, and one of five sides who find themselves on five points from their opening three matches.
